The Communities

The children and youth who attend the Franciscan Youth Center live in some of Baltimore Cityís toughest communities. Community problems in these areas include substance abuse, drug trafficking, gangs, teenage pregnancy, and high rates of criminal violence. These are economically challenged areas as well, with 41% of households earning less than $25,000 per year in a state where the median income is close to $60,000. More than 50% of households are headed by a single female, and more than 32% of the population aged 16-64 are not in the labor force.

The Franciscan Youth Center is one of very few allies for children and youth in these neighborhoods as they fight to survive against what would otherwise be surmountable odds. The basic human needs of proper nutrition, safety, caring relationships, opportunities for accomplishment, and the ability to set and achieve positive goals are unmet for youth who have as much right to them as any human being anywhere. These needs must be met for our youth, and they must be met in ways that give youth power to compete successfully for educational opportunities and professional careers in a high tech, global society. All of the children and youth served by FYC attend Baltimore City Public Schools and a large majority qualify for free or reduced lunches, which clearly identifies their familiesí economic need.
